Purpose: Silver ion not only functions as antimicrobial through electric generations which destroys the cell membrane of microbials but prevents second infection of microbial by controlling the inflammatory stage and facilitates the wound healing process. The authors have decided to evaluate the hydrophilic polyurethane Polymem-Silver¢ç dressing with semi-permeable film backing.
Methods: 20 patients with 2nd degree burn wounds with the symptom of inflammation who had been admitted during from May to August, 2007 were clinically tested. The ages were from 20 months to 61 years olds. The burn wound site were divided in half and the effectiveness of Silver of each half of wound site were evaluated. Due to the difficulties of judging the inflammation, we evaluated each site by reddness, swelling, the degree of amount of exudates and pains by measuring it from 0 to 5, 0 being the lowest and 5 being the highest, and microbial tests were also performed.
Results: Among the 20 cases, the cases with caring by Polymem-silver¢ç, the duration of factor¡¯s point becoming 1 are redness 7¡¾1.3 day, edema 5¡¾2.2 discharge 10¡¾1.8 day and the average admission day 14¡¾1.6 day.
Conclusion: Polymem-Silver¢ç have reduced the inflammations by maintaining moisturized environments and constant release of silver ions. And it showed the advantages of being un-stained and less painful on dressing changes due to less adhesiveness of the dressing. In case of burn wounds with high risk of inflammation, Polymem Silver was better than regular Polymem in terms of reducing inflammation and pain.
